Vile Flesh — A Poem
The words are out
The tongue has spoken,
Hear it speaking
Spewing river waters of dirty filth.
The spring of thoughts
Start at the human heart,
How we feel about others…
Warm or cold,
Casting sunny smiles, or
Sulking like the winter snow.
Covering everything green and warm,
Those that were once bathed in the sunlight.
Too late!
The words uttered
The damage is done,
Takes root, breeds enmity… glowering hate.
Enemy to the body
The tongue is…
Given free rein,
Talks what it wants.
Not of wise thoughts from the human brain,
But from the seat of the human heart,
Given to hasty emotions.
O, human tongue!
Vile and vain,
You hide within,
By you, O tongue,
The body’s death knell is rung.
Human repute down the drain,
Vile blasphemer, Wretched thing.
Why speakest thou things in vain?
Note: This poem reflects the thoughts found in the Book of James, Chapter 3, in the Bible. It speaks of the Tongue as an instrument of evil. The same tongue is used to praise God and curse people. James asks us, “How can that be?” He asks us to be watchful, mindful of the deadly poison the tongue is, and to stop giving into slander, gossip, and spewing filth using our tongue. Our tongue only says what’s buried in our hearts. So it’s time to catch yourself using your tongue only for speaking blessings over others. Avoid the urge to curse others so that you may feel instant gratification of your flesh. Control your tongue!
